Imperial College Wikipedia Society Freshers' Fair

The Imperial College Wikipedians are a student social society of Imperial College Union. We aim to provide a social space for like minded wiki-enthusiasts to get together to edit, update and enjoy the many facets of Wikipedia. We hold regular edit sessions and attempt to promote greater involvement from the student community in contributing to Wikipedia content.

Freshers’ Fair 2012

On Tuesday 2nd October the Wikipedia society of Imperial College manned their second ever freshers’ fair. Amidst the mayhem of new students and returning students filling their calendars with weird and wonderful new hobbies, the IC Wikipedians offered the chance to join this year’s cohort of student editors. Interest was not in short supply and after exhausting a stockpile of Wikipedia badges and stickers, more than a hundred and twenty people are now on this year’s mailing list.

Autumn Term 2012

The term started with the first Wikisocial of the year to welcome new members, on the 16th Oct 2012, 1830, Union Bar. This was followed in close succession by a Newbies' Wikilounge on the evening of the 23rd Oct for some light training of our newest users and an informal edit session. We take advice from our members through these events as to the focus of the following months, but generally expect to hold editing sessions every three weeks.

• The Freshers’ Fair 2012 was a great success for Wikipedians Ed and Tom, who study at the College and run the society. This exciting event gave a chance for societies to showcase themselves, and the Wikipedia Society did just that. I managed to spend the whole day and get many potential Wikipedians on board. It was great to see so much interest from those who did not know what the Wikipedia society was about or what it did. I really enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere of the Fair and being stationed next to a Tea Society certainly didn’t hurt. People dunked their biscuits while we answered many questions by those intrigued by Wikipedia. Students were keen to get editing, by the end of the event we managed to get over 100 students sign up to our list. Hopefully, this success will continue and the Wikipedian community will blossom at Imperial College.
