Producing a series of video interviews with the key figures in digital rights battles, such as ID Cards, the Crypto Wars and DRM.

Outline

Volunteers will produce a series of short (10-15 minutes) interview-based films to document the key arguments and outcomes of digital rights battles fought in the UK and Europe.

We would structure the series to capture the wide range of civil and consumer rights issues that intersect with digital technology. Appropriate topics would include, for example, the intellectual property rights in the Global Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the Crypto Wars, RIPA, ID Cards, anti-circumvention provisions, copyright term extension and data retention directives.

We estimate a three-day production schedule per video, which includes arranging and conducting the interviews as well as post-production editing and quality control. Open Rights Group's core staff will connect volunteers with appropriate interview targets and ensure high standards in production values.

The key to ensuring these videos' utility will be securing the most relevant and exciting speakers, and then presenting their words in a viewer-friendly format.

Benefits

The primary outcome will be a series of videos, made available for reuse and remix, that document how and why digital rights debates have emerged as the civil rights battlegrounds of the information age.

These arguments and outcomes are currently not easily available because they have never received systematic documentary review. These videos will be an invaluable resource to current and future generations of academics and activists in order for them to learn about the key decisions and figures.

ORG is in a unique position to document and promote this work, being highly connected with the individuals involved in these battles, having volunteers and management capabilities and also a high level of contact with academic and activist viewers and re-users.

Requirements

Ideally, we would spend a total of £2,000 on producing a series of ten videos. We have budgeted a need of £200 per video, which includes travel (£75) and subsistence (£15/day) expenses for volunteers, in addition to video consumables £25/day.

However, depending on the funders' allocation of budget, we would be happy to discuss reducing or scaling up the project as appropriate. We would not envisage producing more than 15 videos however. A smaller series of videos would still be an excellent resource provided the most important subjects were selected for inclusion.

Volunteering

Open Rights Group has an existing volunteer-base and volunteer management capacity that would be relied upon to produce these videos.
