Comment This is a draft proposal for an event focused on WMUK's future technical capacity.

Background

The Wikimedia projects are based on the open-source MediaWiki software, which is developed jointly by volunteers and Wikimedia employees. The Wikimedia Foundation are the lead developers of MediaWiki: they lead the main development work and they operate the Wikimedia projects. Recently, Wikimedia Deutschland has started significantly developing MediaWiki through the Wikidata project, which aims to be a free knowledge base supporting MediaWiki projects. Wikimedia UK is in a good position to help develop MediaWiki over the next few years, and also to improve its existing technical tools.

The projects are also supported by a host of other tools and pieces of software, including projects hosted by the Wikimedia Labs, as well as projects such as QRpedia. There are also a number of open-source software tools used by the Wikimedia organisations, including CiviCRM.

This workshop aims to bring together experts in technology from both the Wikimedia movement and the UK tech community in order to set out what WMUK could do to help improve the Wikimedia technology infrastructure in the next few years, and what technical capacity WMUK would need to establish in order to do so, in order to make a meaningful impact on the Wikimedia projects and free knowledge as a whole.

The workshop will take place over the course of a weekend - dates TBC. The meeting would probably be best located at the WMUK office at Old Street, London.
