Wikimedia UK announces the launch of the 2010-2011 Global Wikipedia Fund Raiser

Chair of Wikimedia UK, Andrew Turvey said: "Last month, more than 80,000 volunteers from all countries worked together to bring Wikipedia and its sister sites to the world. Wikipedia spends any money it receives on keeping the projects and the service running worldwide ensuring that everyone can share the 35m articles and images available across all projects.

Any money received will help Wikimedia to add more content to its fast growing projects such as Wikimedia Common where there are 7.3m are freely licensed images available for anyone to use. It will encourage many more to get involved - already there are around 9,430 new Wikipedia articles per day - your donation will help that number rise. Wikimedia is the world's 5th biggest set of websites with 373m unique visitors per month and around 13.4bn page requests per month. And this is all done for free with a full time staff of less than 40 ensuring that the world's greatest encyclopaedia is available at anyone's finger tips all year long in more than 260 languages and that the site can become a vehicle to foster understanding; raise educational standards and deepen the pool of shared knowledge worldwide.

Wikipedia was described by one donor last year as: 'a shining example of the Internet's potential'(1). Working collaboratively on these project helps those involved foster understanding, raise educational standards and deepen the pool of shared knowledge worldwide. Please donate and help us to keep this shining example of the internet's potential going at the following address: (add relevant URL)

With Wikipedia approaching its 10th birthday next January, Wikimedia UK has exciting plans for the coming months with a Galleries Libraries & Museums Conference at the British Museum (Nov 26-27) & the festivities surrounding the 10th birthday of Wikipedia on January 15th 2011. Join us and get involved and help us to set up birthday celebrations in your area of the UK (add Wikimedia UK joining URL).
