All Wikimedia sites have an open, documented, evolving API (a machine readable interface) allowing other sites or apps to search, and extract data from, many millions of resources.

Anyone making a search tool can take this opportunity to cross-search relevant articles and media.

Queries can be restricted to specific categories (for example a subject area or a particular quality level) and to specific types of resource (such as media files or articles).

For general documentation of the API see MediaWiki:API.

DBpedia has a Linked Data view of facts and figures extracted from Wikipedia allowing rich, database-like queries.

Some tools made with these APIs are listed at Wikipedia:Tools.

If you have something specific you want to do with the API, get in touch with Wikimedia UK who can help:(infoatwikimedia.org.uk).[1]
