Job Title: Digital Skills Wikimedian

Hours: Full time (35 hours per week), but open to job sharing. Please indicate this on your application.

Location: Flexible working, with some travel to our Head Office in Southwark, and occasional national travel.

Reporting to: Project Advisor

Starting salary: £25,000-28,000 pa depending on skills and experience (pro rata for part time hours/job share)

Benefits: 25 days annual leave plus public holidays (pro rata). WMUK offers a pension scheme, with a current employer contribution of 6%

Contract: Fixed term until 31st March 2023

Purpose of job: To coordinate and achieve delivery outlined in the National Lottery Heritage funded project ‘Developing Open Knowledge skills, tools and communities of practice for sustainable digital preservation’. Delivering activities with partner institutions to improve their knowledge and skills related to open access and open knowledge, involving and empowering staff and volunteers and co-ordinating peer learning. You will be the main member of staff responsible for project delivery; delivering training and workshops, planning and supporting collaborative events with partner institutions, involving and empowering staff and volunteers, and co-ordinating peer learning.

About the role[edit | edit source]

We are looking for a dynamic project leader with experience of delivering successful, collaborative partnerships and events with the heritage, cultural or education sectors, and supporting volunteers. You would be joining a small and friendly programmes team at Wikimedia UK, covering a period of additional funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver Digital Skills to heritage organisations.

Main Duties[edit | edit source]

Programme Development

  • With the Project Advisor, develop the format for activities for digital skills training, such as Wikipedia editing events and webinars, and short-term Wikimedian in Residence projects.
  • With the Project Advisor, produce learning materials for the project.
  • Within the project parameters identify potential partners within the heritage sector. Actively pursue, set up and manage relationships with partner organisations.
  • Work with the Project Advisor and other Wikimedia UK staff to recruit and support project volunteers.
  • With support from the Project Advisor, monitor and organise resources for activities (including expenditure).

Programme Delivery

  • Support recruitment of attendees to webinars and events.
  • Lead on delivery of webinars, editathons and training for partner organisations and heritage sector individuals.
  • Support heritage organisations in engaging with diverse audiences for their wiki events.
  • Deliver tailored consultancy for a small group of heritage organisations to create - and start delivering - an action plan of Wikimedia engagement.
  • Act as the main point of contact for specific partner organisations and volunteers and ensure proactive, effective and regular communications with these stakeholders.
  • With the Project Advisor, facilitate development of communities of practice.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact

  • With support from the Project Advisor and the Evaluation Assistant,
  • Handle documentation and record all relevant metrics against set goals, including event attendee feedback.
  • Produce regular updates for the team and senior managers using CRM data.
  • Undertake assessment and evaluation of all projects, including collecting feedback from stakeholders, accurate use of CRM and formal report writing.
  • Report regularly on programme plans, outputs and outcomes. Support creation of the progress and final evaluation reports.

Communication and Dissemination

  • Capture digital outputs to be used in promotion (e.g. photos of editing events).
  • Support Wikimedia UK’s social media activities, in collaboration with the Communications and Governance Coordinator.
  • Identify opportunities to reach the print and broadcast media and liaise with the CEO and the Communications and Governance Coordinator to write and circulate press releases where appropriate.
  • Write blog posts, create case studies, and generally contribute to the promotion and dissemination of the project’s work and impact. Liaise with the Project Advisor to work with the National Heritage Lottery Fund on communications.

  • Experience of working in partnership with heritage and cultural organisations.
  • Experience of managing partnership projects.
  • Experience of working effectively with staff and volunteers and supporting skills development.

Skills and Abilities[edit | edit source]

  • Fully fluent and literate in English.
  • An understanding of and empathy for Wikimedia UK's mission to help people and organisations build and preserve open knowledge to share and use freely.
  • Understanding of issues around underrepresented heritage (desirable).
  • Flexible approach, with the capability to identify and manage opportunities and risk.
  • A high level of initiative and self-motivation, with good time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing.
  • Good reporting skills.
  • Good relationship management skills.
  • Good problem solving, numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Familiarity with editing Wikimedia projects is desirable, although training will be given.
