GGTP 65 Wikipedia edit day
|
This event has now been merged with the voting for change editathon.
About the event
Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? It is the encylopedia that anyone can edit, but there is usually more info on the topics of interest to those who choose to edit it. Systemic bias on Wikipedia is a known issue that many people are trying to tackle, and you can help!
Like all Girl Geeks events, this event is aimed at girls and women, but boys and men are more than welcome, especially if they bring a girl geek with them!
The day will be split into two halves, the morning being a beginners guide to Wikipedia editing: how to get started, where to find articles to edit, and more.
The afternoon will be an Intermediate session, where we all muck in and get contributing to Wikipedia! As we'll be in a library, we will have access to the resources there to help us contribute effectively.
You are welcome to come to both halves, or just one. We will be going for lunch at 1pm in Longsight, details to be confirmed.
How do I prepare
- Sign up for the event
- Create a Wikipedia account
- Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided)
- Think about what you would like to edit
- If you are a beginner and want a head start you can learn about editing using the Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia - but that isn't compulsory!
Trainers
Sign up below if you want to help running the day, especially with guiding the beginners in the morning.
