PROJECTS DELIVERED

Aim 1 - Knowledge Equity Increase the engagement and representation of marginalised people and subjects, Develop partnerships that increase access to underrepresented cultural heritage, Support the development of minority and indigenous language Wikipedia’s, Encourage new and existing partners to help tackle the gender gap on Wikimedia, Identify other areas of inequality and bias and create partnerships to help address these, Engage with volunteers and partners across the UK, widening the charity’s geographic reach, Diversify content producers by recruiting new editors from under-represented communities, Support the development of a more inclusive culture across the Wikimedia projects, Ensure that Wikimedia UK’s own policies and practices support diversity and inclusion.

Progress: In October we officially started the second half of the volunteering project with ten new volunteers actively taking part in the sessions and 5 doing the sessions at their own pace through recorded sessions. The firs three sessions, two of which were in October, are introductory training sessions

Wikipedia Team - monthly drop in- Due to having two volunteering projects running simultaneously. The volunteering coordinators and I have started to host monthly drop in sessions for all volunteers to engage with and ask question that may not be covered in the sessions we have going. 25 October 2021 15:00 - 16:00

Aim 2 - Digital Literacy Work with partners to develop digital, data and information literacy through Wikimedia: Support the education sector’s engagement with Wikimedia as a digital literacy tool, Facilitate Wikimedia-based digital, data and information literacy projects with other partners, Create content and resources for learners and educators, Advocate for the inclusion of Wikimedia in curriculum, syllabus, and course development, Collaborate with the civil society sector and other partners to combat misinformation.

Progress: Towards the end of October, Leeds Library suggested hosting a wiki editathon centred around This edit-a-thon will focus on traditionally underrepresented and marginalised voices in contemporary comics and graphic novels, exploring the representation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic, disabled and LGBTQ+ comics creators and characters. The editathon will be advertised on Eventbrite to encourage and diverse and wide range of people to come to the session. The event will be held on the 11th of November at Leeds central library. I will be there to offer any support to participants and to contribute to the event. Information on the superhero’s will be provided by Leeds Library and their partner institutions (Thought bubble and British Library).

Create changes in policy and practice that enable open knowledge to flourish: Support and enable individual organisations to adopt more open policies and practice, Promote and facilitate sector-level change towards open knowledge, Work with national and international partners to build the case for free knowledge, Advocate for open knowledge within the UK’s public policy and legislative arena, Contribute to international advocacy activities and programmes as appropriate.
