Wikimedia UK is the national platform for open knowledge, bringing together practical and policy expertise about Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. We work with world-leading cultural and educational institutions to increase access to knowledge, and develop information literacy skills. Volunteers are fundamental to our work and we are committed to growing Wikimedia UK’s community, with a particular focus on people who are currently underrepresented. We are therefore recruiting for a part time Outreach and Community Coordinator to join our small and friendly staff team. Some experience of working with volunteers is essential, as are excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to opening up access to knowledge and information.

Job Description

Job Title: Outreach and Community Coordinator
Hours: 0.4FTE (2 days/week)
Duration Permanent contract
Location: Flexible within the UK
Salary: Starting salary £30,000 per annum pro rata depending on experience
Pension: WMUK offers a pension scheme, with 6% employer pension contributions
Annual leave: 25 days plus public holidays (pro rata)

Objective

To take a lead role in the development of the Wikimedia community in the UK, by running projects, campaigns and other activities to support volunteers and recruit new contributors - particularly from underrepresented communities and groups that are new to Wikimedia UK. Within this work you will be guided by Wikimedia UK’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles, including ‘aspiring to be shaped by underrepresented communities’ and ‘seeking to actively involve underrepresented communities as co-creators, not just participants or beneficiaries’.

Key responsibilities

Community development

  • Seed and develop new contributor communities within underrepresented groups, developing a range of activities appropriate to their needs. Identify and develop partnerships with new community group
  • Reach out and onboard new volunteers. Manage volunteer application sites such as Reach, Do it, WMUK volunteer application form
  • Contribute to the organisation’s work to define priority communities, particularly in the light of our strategy and Wikimedia UK’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan
  • Pilot and evaluate different models of community engagement, in consultation with the Programme Manager and the Director of Programmes and Evaluation
  • Support community engagement in broader Wikimedia campaigns (as an example, Wiki Loves Monuments)
  • Play a lead role in organising training for volunteers, including our Train the Trainer course (delivered by an external facilitator). Develop community building activities for the whole cohort of existing volunteer trainers
  • Explore other activities to support the development of our community, in consultation with the Programme Manager

Programme delivery

  • Drive volunteer engagement with Wikimedia UK grants, and support their delivery and reporting
  • Provide support for other volunteer-led activities, such as editing events and competitions
  • Support community building activities around projects delivered within WMUK programmes, e.g. conferences
  • Support other staff within the programmes team in their own work with volunteers
  • Deliver the annual Volunteer community survey
  • Support WMUK's involvement in the Volunteer Supporters' Network

Reporting

  • Report regularly on programme plans, outputs and outcomes, in collaboration with other staff in the Programmes team
  • Handle documentation and record all relevant programme metrics. Update CRM records for volunteers and activities

Communication

  • Act as a key point of contact and support for Wikimedia UK volunteers
  • Write blog posts, create case studies, and generally contribute to the promotion and dissemination of our work and impact, in collaboration with the Communications team
  • Maintain Volunteering with us and Get involved pages

Person specification

Experience

  • Community organising, supporting volunteers and volunteer-run projects
  • Supporting minoritised groups
  • Project management, delivering activities and events
  • Designing and delivering training or skills development
  • Project reporting and communicating outcomes  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge or experience of inclusive, participatory and equitable approaches to collaborating with volunteer communities is desirable
  • Collaborative, supportive approach
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to involve and inspire volunteers, who may be working remotely
  • Passionate about the mission and values of Wikimedia UK
  • An understanding of the Wikimedia volunteer communities (desirable)
