About the event
This event will be an opportunity for staff to learn more about Wikipedia and the benefits of Wikipedia for science outreach, and to create new and improve existing content on Wikipedia pertaining to stem cells.
Most articles on Wikipedia relating to Stem Cells are semi-protected, meaning that anyone intending to take part must create their account 5 days in advance, and must make at least 10 edits before they will be able to edit those pages. Please see below for further information about making edits. More training will be provided on the day.
How do I prepare?
- Sign up for the event
- Create a Wikipedia account
- Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided)
- Learn about editing: Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia
- Make some basic edits: see Wikipedia's Community Portal for ideas. I recommend spelling / grammar for easy fixes without needing to know too much about editing.
- Think about what you would like to edit about - you can even prepare some materials to bring with you on the day
Sources
Wikipedia is a tertiary resource, which relies upon secondary sources. Wikipedia is not a place for original research.
For more guidance on the use of sources, see this guide here.
There are several important figures in the history of genetics whose Wikipedia pages have much scope for improvement, and for whom the Wellcome have digitized profiles/information in the Codebreakers pages. See the Hit List below for suggestions of specific pages to improve.
Programme
- 13:00 - Training & Introduction to Wikipedia
- 14:30 - Break, the EDIT!
Full training will be provided.

Articles to be created
The following people and organization do not yet have pages, but should meet the notability critera:
- Alan Coulson, Frederick Sanger and Gerard Wyatt don't have pages. The links should take you to information on them, if you'd like to create these pages.
- Several existing pages refer to the Medical Research Council Blood Group Unit, but this doesn't yet have its own page. This information could be used to create a page and then links could be made to the existing pages that reference the Unit (and to Robert Russell race and Ruth Sanger's pages, if someone adds the relevant information!).
Articles to be improved
Some articles on people who played a role in the history of genetics offer scope for improvement. These include the following:
- C.P. Blacker doesn't have an infobox. There's also more information to add about him here.
- Malcolm Ferguson-Smith doesn't have an infobox, and his page is a little sparse. There's some relevant information and pictures here.
- Hans Grüneberg's page is almost all bullet-points. Information and pictures can be found here.
- Arthur Mourant's page is not particularly extensive at present. Relevant information/images are here.
- Lionel Penrose's page is quite brief at present, though well referenced. Information on Penrose to use in building up the page is located here.
- Guido Pontecorvo's page is mostly bullet-points and could be significantly extended using this profile.
- Robert Russell Race has a page which only consists of about one paragraph. Ruth Sanger's is only marginally better. There is some information to use in improving their pages here.
