Objectives and outcomes

Public Outreach

The objective is to hold a minimum of 4 public events or workshops (Edit-a-thons) during the course of the residency (to September 2016). Each event will have a target audience and a well-defined subject for editors to work within.

17th month Outcomes:

  • 26-7 May - Attended CILIP Wales 2 day conference in Swansea, with trade stand to promote Wikipedia projects and collaboration. Lots of potential leads, and invite to write article on Wiki for Publiclibrariesnews.com to be published soon.
  • 3 June - Wikipedia edit-a-thon for 5 members of the Urdd (aged 14-17) at Urdd National Eisteddfod in Flint

Participants

  • 8 June - 30 minute presentation, Q&A panel session and breakout sessions for about 50 Post graduate Students at Cardiff University on Wikipedia as an open education resource as part of a Digital Humanities day for members of SWW DTP (South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership)
  • 9 June - Presentation for 7 people about Wikipedia and family/community learning as part of a Ceredigion/Pembrokeshire community learning event at NLW.
  • 15 June - discussion with head of Wales for peace project about training project staff to edit and upload images to Wiki (June 20/21?) and taking part in their outreach program in Caernarfon as part of the traveling poppies exhibition in Sep/Oct 2016.
  • A proposal to invite Wikipedia Visiting Scholars has been excepted by Library management and I am now advertising the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars position.

Education

The aim is to develop a model for taking Wikipedia into Schools and Universities and to hold 4 events with the education sector during the course of the residence (7 months)

  • 21st May - Attended and presented at Wikimedia UK Education meeting in Leicester
  • 12 June - Discussion with Wales for Peace project about embedding Wikipedia training into schools outreach program for Summer/autumn 2016.
  • Invited by Susan Easton (Learning and Work Institute) to present informally at their family learning event in London on 19th July
  • Contact has been made with several schools interested in hosting Wikipedia Awareness workshops for sixth form students.
  • I have been working with the NLW education team to develop a Wikipedia based module for the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification which would provide students across Wales with a template for organising and running their own Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and part of the qualification. The challenge will sit alongside a number of different challenge and students must choose one to complete each year. NLW will provide support to students who take up the challenge. The proposal is currently being prepared for submission to the WJEC (Examining body). If accepted the scheme would be in place by the beginning of Autumn term.

Volunteer projects

  • The Wikidata Visiting Scholar is working on creating detailed Wikidata for 5000 Welsh landscape images already uploaded to Wiki Commons by NLW. You can see more here
  • 3 Volunteers are now working on the Dictionary of Welsh Biography project, creating stub articles using entries from DWB as a source.
  • Basic Wikidata has been created for 550 19th century ships registered at Aberystwyth, as a platform for future volunteer projects.

More information about projects held with the NLW volunteer team can be found here

Upcoming events

  • June 21th - 27th Wikimania
  • July 13th – Wikipedia talk/workshop for 60 students at Lampeter Secondary School
  • July 19th - Learning and Work institute event in London

Staff Workshops and Events

The objective is to engage with staff and to promote digital connections by inviting staff to learn more about Wikipedia and how to edit.

17th month Outcomes:

  • Nothing to report

Planned events:

  • Nothing to report

Digital collections for release

The objective is to identify and release digital archives to Wiki-commons, primarily for use in Wikipedia articles.

17th month Outcomes:

  • Nothing to report

Collections identified for future upload:

  • Framed Works – abt 600 images (needs to be ingested first – Progress is being made). All pre 1880 content shared by the NLW with the Public Catalogue Foundation for the BBC ‘Your Paintings’ project.
  • Welsh Portraits - 5,000 images (needs to be ingested first). This is the largest single Welsh portrait collection including examples of framed works, etchings and photographs. The collection includes portraits from the middle ages to modern times. (Preparing this collection for upload has now become a priority for the NLW, and it is hoped we can upload before the end of the year – UPDATE : Although this collection remains a NLW priority, the Systems department have yet to start work on preparing the collection)

Building bridges

The objective is to affect changes to NLW culture, guidelines, policy and procedure in order to create a sustainable relationship with Wikimedia UK and Wikipedia and to promote the open knowledge ethos.

17th month Outcomes:

  • Discussions with Tom Pert from The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales about sharing data sets via Wikidata, which will complement NLW data in Wikidata.
  • Wikipedian in Residence is part of committee set up to redevelop Welsh Biography Online website. Wikidata based functionality and links to Wikipedia are being proposed.
  • NLW has now embedded upload to Wikipedia into the process of choosing and processing collection for digitization.
  • Myself and Dr Dafydd Tudur have been asked to contribute a chapter to a book on open access, using the Wikipedia residency as a case study. The project is being managed by Fred Saunderson NLS
  • Myself and Dr Dafydd Tudur (head of Digital Access) have begun writing a business case with a strong case for adopting an open access approach similar to the Rijksmuseum. Once completed the document will be made available to Wikimedia UK and presented to the National Library management team
