Objectives and outcomes

Public Outreach

The objective is to hold a minimum of 4 public events or workshops (Edit-a-thons) during the course of the residency (to September 2016). Each event will have a target audience and a well-defined subject for editors to work within.

18th month Outcomes:

  • 21–28 June- Attended Wikimania conference and preconference . Below are the highlights
  • Presented on A lesson learned – sharing images openly at pre-conference learning day
  • Contributed to several discussions about making Wikidata more accessible to GLAM’s
  • Made good contacts for helping NLW share texts with Wikisource
  • Made contact and learned a great deal about Wikipedia projects with the Swedish Education sector.
  • Discussions with Alex Stinson and others about the direction of GLAM collaborations – what works and what doesn’t
  • 19 July – Display stand at Family Learning changes lives event at City Lit in London. Learning and Work Institute are keen to collaborate with Wikipedia in Wales by hosting a series of community events, possibly based around adding images of local landmarks to Commons and making descriptions available in multiple languages.
  • A proposal to invite Wikipedia Visiting Scholars has been excepted by Library management and I am now advertising the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars position.
  • Article Placeholders. Following a consultation with the Welsh Wicipedia community and discussions with Lydia Pintcher and other Wikidata staff a formal request has been made to include the Article Placeholders feature on cy Wikipedia. It is hoped that this will make more information available in the Welsh language and encourage volunteers to translate Wikidata items into Welsh.

Education

The aim is to develop a model for taking Wikipedia into Schools and Universities and to hold 4 events with the education sector during the course of the residence (7 months)

  • 13 July – Using Wikipedia in School – a talk for 40 year 12 pupils at Lampeter Secondary School. Students were also asked to complete a short survey. Below are some of the results.
  • Do You use Wikipedia to help with homework?
  • Never: 0%
  • Occasionally: 50%
  • Often: 50%
  • Do You use Wikipedia to help with Coursework?
  • Never: 15%
  • Occasionally: 42.5%
  • Often: 42.5%
  • Are you more likely to use Wikipedia having attended this session?
  • Yes: 90%
  • No: 10%
  • I have been working with the NLW education team to develop a Wikipedia based module for the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification which would provide students across Wales with a template for organising and running their own Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and part of the qualification. The challenge will sit alongside a number of different challenge and students must choose one to complete each year. NLW will provide support to students who take up the challenge. The proposal is currently being prepared for submission to the WJEC (Examining body). If accepted the scheme would be in place by the beginning of Autumn term.
  • Discussions with Staff in the Welsh Governments Welsh Language department lead to interesting discussions about the possibility of providing Wikipedia training for Secondary School teachers via teacher training consortiums.
  • Discussions with the Wales for Peace team about running Wikipedia workshops for school children in North wales this Autumn as part of their WWI remembrance program.

Volunteer projects

  • The Wikidata Visiting Scholar is working on creating detailed Wikidata for 5000 Welsh landscape images already uploaded to Wiki Commons by NLW. You can see more here
  • 3 Volunteers are now working on the Dictionary of Welsh Biography project, creating stub articles using entries from DWB as a source.
  • Basic Wikidata has been created for 550 19th century ships registered at Aberystwyth, as a platform for future volunteer projects. A volunteer program to add more data, including a collaboration with Ceredigion County Archives and Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales is now being planned and organised.

More information about projects held with the NLW volunteer team can be found here

Upcoming events

  • July 20th – Introduction to Wikipedia and training session for Wales for Peace staff and volunteers at Cardiff University.
  • October 19th – I have been invited to deliver a paper on GLAM Wiki at MCG's Museums+Tech conference at Wellcome Collection, London.
  • October 21st – Host Wiki Workshops as part of Wales for Peace Schools Conference, Caernarfonshire.

Staff Workshops and Events

The objective is to engage with staff and to promote digital connections by inviting staff to learn more about Wikipedia and how to edit.

18th month Outcomes:

  • Nothing to report

Planned events:

  • Nothing to report

Digital collections for release

The objective is to identify and release digital archives to Wiki-commons, primarily for use in Wikipedia articles.

18th month Outcomes:

  • Nothing to report

Collections identified for future upload:

  • Framed Works – abt 600 images (needs to be ingested first – Progress is being made). All pre 1880 content shared by the NLW with the Public Catalogue Foundation for the BBC ‘Your Paintings’ project.
  • Welsh Portraits - 5,000 images (needs to be ingested first). This is the largest single Welsh portrait collection including examples of framed works, etchings and photographs. The collection includes portraits from the middle ages to modern times. (Preparing this collection for upload has now become a priority for the NLW, and it is hoped we can upload before the end of the year – UPDATE : Work has begun on making this collection available. Hopefully the collection will now be ready for upload to Commons within the next couple of months

Building bridges

The objective is to affect changes to NLW culture, guidelines, policy and procedure in order to create a sustainable relationship with Wikimedia UK and Wikipedia and to promote the open knowledge ethos.

17th month Outcomes:

  • Dictionary of Welsh Biography - Pitched to the Board of Trustees about collaborating with Wikipedia and incorporating wikidata/Wikipedia links into proposed new website. The Board have agreed to the proposal. They also agreed to offer future contributors the option of contributing on an open licence.
  • Discussions with NLW management about releasing out of copyright digital texts to Wikisource are underway
  • Continuing discussions with Tom Pert from The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales about sharing data sets via Wikidata, which will complement NLW data in Wikidata.
  • NLW has now embedded upload to Wikipedia into the process of choosing and processing collection for digitization.
  • Myself and Dr Dafydd Tudur have been asked to contribute a chapter to a book on open access, using the Wikipedia residency as a case study. The project is being managed by Fred Saunderson NLS
  • Myself and Dr Dafydd Tudur (head of Digital Access) have begun writing a business case with a strong case for adopting an open access approach similar to the Rijksmuseum. Once completed the document will be made available to Wikimedia UK and presented to the National Library management team
