Wikimedia for Librarians - In a nutshell

  • Where?: Scottish Government
  • When?: Monday 5th December - 09:45 - 16:00
  • Point of contact: Jenny Foreman, Paul Gray

About the event

A full day Wikipedia training & editing session, geared specifically toward librarians, and starting from the premise that open knowledge has benefits for both the library and society.

The day will led by former Wikimedian in Residence at Museums Galleries Scotland, Sara Thomas. In the morning session you'll learn about some of the site's most important rules and guidelines, and how to make edits yourself. You'll also learn about other Wikimedia projects, and how other libraries are engaging with them. In the afternoon, you'll have the opportunity to edit the site yourself, making improvements to existing articles, or creating entirely new ones.

How do I prepare?
  • Create a Wikipedia account
  • Some computers will be provided, or bring a laptop if you'd rather.
  • Think about what you would like to edit about - you can even prepare some materials to bring with you on the day

Programme

  • Morning: Introduction & training, approx 09:45 - 12:45
  • Afternoon: Editing session, approx 13:15 - 15:00

Articles for creation / improvement

It has been suggested that we align ourselves with the Wikiproject Women in Red, who aim to add more women's biographies to Wikipedia. They choose various different topics each month, which this month includes women writers. There is a list of British women writers missing from the encyclopedia here. If you would like to create an article about one of these women, you will need to find a minimum of 3 reliable sources concerning their life and work. You may wish to search for these sources in advance, and bring materials with you on the day. Please note, these sources do not need to be online, but should meet Wikipedia's criteria for reliable sources.
