Abstract/Crynodeb

Wikimedia’s mission is to be ‘the sum of all human knowledge’. That Wikipedia has amassed over 47 million articles in approximately 300 languages in its short existence is quite incredible and a testament to the dedication of its community of volunteers. Yet the distribution of articles in these different language Wikipedias is nowhere near evenly spread.

Wikipedia’s new Content Translation tool offers an impactful means of sharing open knowledge globally between languages as it brings up an article on one side of the screen in one language and helps translate it, paragraph by paragraph, to create the article in a different language taking all the formatting across to the new article so a native speaker just has to check to make sure the translation is as good as it can be.

This workshop will give practical hands-on guidance to demonstrate the successful model already employed in a Higher Education context where translating articles is offered at every editathon we host and where Translation Studies MSc students have gained meaningful published translation practice over the last four semesters in a row. In this way, bilingual and multilingual staff, students and members of the public are gaining new skills and are motivated to share open knowledge between languages, by improving areas of under-representation and building understanding between different languages and cultures.

What will attendees take away from this session?

Attendees will get a chance to see the process of how we engage students, staff and students in translating articles from start to finish. Including: how we select articles to translate; how to begin the translation using the Content Translation tool; how to circumvent potential issues; how to publish the article; how to add templates to the published article to credit the translator and identify the article as part of an education assignment.

Cenhadaeth Wicimedia yw i gyrraedd ‘cyfanswm holl wybodaeth ddynol’. Mae’r ffaith fod Wicipedia wedi crynhoi dros 47 miliwn o erthyglau mewn oddeutu 300 o ieithoedd ystod ei oes fer yn anhygoel ac yn dyst i ymroddiad ei chymuned o wirfoddolwyr. Eto, mae dosbarthiad yr erthyglau hyn yn Wicipedia yn yr ieithoedd gwahanol yn bell o fod yn gyfartal. Mae erfyn Cyfieithu Cynnwys newydd Wicipedia yn cynnig ffordd effeithiol o rannu gwybodaeth agored yn fyd-eang rhwng ieithoedd gan ei fod yn dod ag erthygl i fyny ar un ochr y sgrin mewn un iaith ac yn helpu i’w gyfieithu, paragraff wrth baragraff, er mwyn creu erthygl mewn iaith wahanol, gan gymryd yr holl fformatio a’i symud draw i’r erthygl newydd fel bod siaradwr brodorol ond yn gorfod gwirio er mwyn gwneud yn siŵr bod y cyfieithiad mor dda ag y mae’n gallu bod. Bydd y gweithdy hwn yn rhoi cyfarwyddyd ymarferol er mwyn dangos model llwyddiannus sydd eisoes yn cael ei ddefnyddio yng nghyd-destun Addysg Uwch lle mae cyfieithu erthyglau yn cael ei gynnig y rhan o bob golygathon rydym yn ei gynnal, a lle mae myfyrwyr MSc Astudiaethau Cyfieithu wedi llwyddo i ymarfer cyfieithu ystyrlon wedi ei gyhoeddi dros y pedwar semester dilynol. Fel yma, mae staff, myfyrwyr ac aelodau o’r cyhoedd sy’n ddwyieithog neu’n amlieithog yn ennill sgiliau newydd ac yn cael eu hysgogi i rannu gwybodaeth agored rhwng ieithoedd, trwy wella meysydd sy’n cael eu tan-gynrychioli a meithrin dealltwriaeth rhwng gwahanol ieithoedd a diwylliannau.
