Abstract/Crynodeb

The Cornish language has around 1000 speakers, so is a very small language with no devolved government to legislate for its protection and promotion. Nevertheless, use of the language is growing and it is being used in more and more situations. With very limited resources, Wikipedia is an ideal opportunity for Cornish but this has been held back by spelling disputes and lack of understanding of Wikipedia itself. With greater collaboration on a Standard Written Form, a new Akademi Kernewek, and a limited but growing programme to teach Cornish in schools, now is a good time to relook at developing wikipedia in Cornish and looking at the role Wikipedia can play in the revival of Cornish.

Mae gan y Gernyweg oddeutu 1000 o siaradwyr, felly mae’n iaith leiafrifol fach iawn heb unrhyw lywodraeth ddatganoledig sy’n deddfu er mwyn ei gwarchod a’i hyrwyddo. Er hynny, mae’r defnydd a wneir o’r iaith yn tyfu ac fe’i defnyddir mewn nifer cynyddol o sefyllfaoedd. Gydag adnoddau cyfyngedig iawn, mae Wicipedia yn cynnig cyfle delfrydol i’r Gernyweg, ond amharwyd ar hyn oherwydd yr anghytuno ynghylch sillafu a diffyg gwybodaeth ynghylch Wicipedia ei hun. Gyda mwy o gydweithredu ar Ffurflen Ysgrifenedig Safonol, sefydlu Akademi Kernewek newydd, a rhaglen sy’n tyfu – er yn gyfyngedig – i ddysgu’r Gernyweg mewn ysgolion, mae nawr yn amser da i ailedrych ar ddatblygu wicipedia mewn Cernyweg ac i edrych ar y rhan y gall Wicipedia ei chwarae i adfywio’r Gernyweg.
