Basic information
- Project Title (If applicable)
- Bennerley Viaduct
- Proposed by
- Harry Mitchell
- Are you currently a member of Wikimedia UK?
- No
Project description
- Briefly describe the issue or problem that motivates this application. What needs are you meeting?
- I've been writing articles about railway architecture and engineering in the UK on and off, using books from WMUK from a previous grant (and an even older one). I've of the articles I've been able to write or improve with these books, which contains 38 articles so far (23 new, 15 expanded), including four featured articles. I'd like to make that five featured articles.
- Describe project activities. What will you use the funding to do?
- I would like to purchase three more books in order to bring the English Wikipedia article on up to featured article status. The project is part-way there already, thanks largely to the books from previous grants. The books are The Architecture of British Bridges (£17.27 on Amazon), The Great Northern Railway in the East Midlands (£20 on Amazon), and The Friargate Line: Derby and the Great Northern Railway (price fluctuates wildly but there's one at that link for £50).
- Describe your plan for evaluating this project. How will you measure success? What types of things will you measure (e.g. content, participants)?
- Success will be the expansion of the Wikipedia article and promotion to featured article status. The books should also allow for improvements to other articles.
- Identify key people involved in this project. How will or could the wider Wikimedian community be involved?
- Mostly me. There will be community involvement at peer review and FAC when it gets to that point.
- If applicable, identify partnering organisations for this project (not essential)
- N/A
If you feel that there is more information that could be for example resources needed, how successes can be measured, and how it fits in with the aims of Wikimedia and Wikimedia UK. Please note that these answers don't have to be definite now, and can be expanded on in conversation with the programme team.
- What targets have you set? What will you measure?
- The target is to bring the article on this bridge to featured article status.
- What contribution will the project make to our strategic goals?
- The strategic goals do not explicitly mention improvements to Wikipedia outside of under-represented groups and languages, but a book for researching Wikipedia is an example given on the Project grants page. The article currently exists in three languages besides English and promotion to FA often encourages more translations.
- Who will be recording/measuring the project metrics, and writing up a project report?
- Me, Harry Mitchell
- What staff support is being requested?
- I would like staff to purchase the books if possible and forward them to me.
- How can you get other volunteers involved? What roles could they have?
- N/A
- What meeting or other space is needed?
- N/A
- Are other resources needed (such as computers, books, camera equipment, food, contacts, infrastructure)? How will they be sourced?
- N/A
- If any partner organisations have been identified, have they been contacted and are they committed?
- N/A
- Does this project require more extensive funding? What would any WMUK funds be used for?
- N/A
- Are external funds needed that we can apply for? If so where will they be sought?
- N/A
- Are there any resources that you can contribute? Such as equipment.
- I already have an extensive bookshelf on the subject, much of which is currently cited in the article.
