mw:Extension:MediaWikiAuth

Randomly stumbled on the site and saw the sitenotice. Have you looked into using mw:Extension:MediaWikiAuth to automatically migrate accounts, preferences, watchlists? Legoktm (talk) 09:14, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Legoktm. It looks like the extension is in beta and not much activity has been tracked on the git... That's why I felt unconfortable with it. Do you know more about the stability/robustness of this extension? You have maybe a few example of successful migrations using it? Kelson (talk) 12:48, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
We used it for the en.uncyclopedia.co migration off of Wikia. It does require a core patch, but it works pretty well. Legoktm (talk) 05:03, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Everything about this was a little bit too late and untested regarding our migration agenda... Kelson (talk) 11:19, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

New domain name

"www.wikimedia.org.uk"? one would hope that "wikimedia.org.uk" will also work (typing those four extra characters is soul-destroying ;-P ) --AlisonW (talk) 17:16, 27 September 2013 (UTC) ps. good luck.

"wikimedia.org.uk" should redirect to "wiki.wikimedia.org.uk", and AFAIK this works. Kelson (talk) 18:42, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

SSL

Should login'd user default to SSL connection in a similar way as on WMF wiki? -- KTC (talk) 20:36, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

I prefer myself. SSL is now forced like before. Kelson (talk) 11:17, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Redirection from old URLs to new URLs

When will uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/whatever start redirecting to wiki.wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/whatever ? Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 12:21, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Toni. Having a redirection would be nice for most of the users. The problem is: if we switch, users who still don't have got their password per email will be stuck. For this reason, we should IMO wait many monthes, maybe a year, before shutting done completly uk.wikimedia.org and put a redirection. Kelson (talk) 07:18, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
If it's possible to access the old wiki under a new URL, and then redirect uk.wikimedia.org ? -- Katie Chan (WMUK) (talk) 09:08, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
Sounds a good idea, I have asked the WMF if something like that is easy to do. Kelson (talk) 15:58, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
That's a brilliant idea, Katie! we really need to have the old published URLs to start redirecting to the new URLs sooner rather than later. Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 16:26, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
+1, some VERY obvious indication (a banner?) on the old wiki that it is not current would also be useful, I just assumed the URLs would remain the same, and I use my address bar history pretty extensively to find resources which I'll now need to find the new addresses for. Sjgknight (talk) 16:29, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
There is a giant yellow site notice at the top of both the old and new wiki with the message. Sometimes it doesn't appear if you've previously dismissed a previous sitenoitce though and requires clearing your cookie before you can see it. -- KTC (talk) 23:18, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
This has now finally taken place. -- Katie Chan (WMUK) (talk) 13:55, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
Excellent, thank you for your work on this. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 16:02, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

wikiwikiwiki

Hello. We now seem to have three 'wiki's in the URL for this site, which seems a bit excessive. Having two would seem better to me, and would bring the number of 'wiki's in line with the Wiki Wiki Bus, WikiWikiWeb, Wikipedia ( + /wiki/) etc.. Could we move it to (www.)wikimedia.org.uk (+ /wiki/) instead please? That would also make it clearer that this is WMUK's main site, rather than a subcomponent of it. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:18, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi Mike. I'm personally happy with the current redirection, although I see no problem to change the name of the wiki to www.wikimedia.org.uk. But, what should be behind www.wikimedia.org.uk seems to be a pretty open and well discussed question currently (we should maybe have something different than the wiki). So, if you could get a broader support within WMUK tech committee, I would fell myself more comfortable with the change you propose. Kelson (talk) 15:57, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
What Mike suggests is in line with other Wikis...and seems more sensible Sjgknight (talk) 16:27, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
If we do change the main URL/subdomain, please make sure that the appropriate auto-redirect is in place so we don't find ourself with bad URLs again in the space of a few days. Sorry to harp on about this but is has added unnecessary complications to preparations for EduWiki, for example. Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 16:31, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
OK, this is implemented now Kelson (talk) 14:47, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Many thanks. :-) Mike Peel (talk) 10:28, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

http autoredirects to https when it shouldn't

Links that rely on http pages (such as the calendar links on events) no longer work as http pages automatically redirect to https versions. This is probably also going to cause major problems for search engines indexing this page. The correct behaviour would be to use the http version as default, and perhaps only redirect to https when users log in. Please could this be fixed? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:35, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Could you please give me one or two links which do not work... I can't see the problem. Kelson (talk) 15:46, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Try [1]. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:48, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
Concerning the calendar stuff, it seems to me that the link works fine (now). Kelson (talk) 14:55, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Nope, still not working. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:41, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Odd, it's working for me. Are you perhaps using non-default settings on something like https everywhere? I use that extension, and have mixed content blocking enabled, and I'm not seeing any issues. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 17:12, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
I don't use https everywhere... I have the same issue in two different browsers (firefox and safari) - whenever I try to access the http version it automatically redirects to https. Also, h2vx still doesn't work, and that's not accessing the site through a browser... Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:25, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Mike, it seems to me that I simply don't understand you correctly. For me, this link works (I get an ICS file to download) and I don't see how this is related to this wiki (I have nothing to do with h2vsx.com). A this stage, I think, it would be better to open a bug with the following information: (1) What you do exactly (2) What you get exactly (3) What you want to get (4) you exact setup. You can also try to catch my on IRC, then we could try to have a more dynamic investigation. Regards 178.196.25.204 18:36, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Yup, there's an ICS file that you can download from that link, but unfortunately it only contains an error message - open it in a text file, and compare it to the output from the old link at [2]. I've just posted a more detailed explanation of the problem on the tech list. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:41, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
