About EduWiki 2013
Wikimedia UK is the national charity supporting the eleven Wikimedia projects (including Wikipedia, Wikiversity, Wikibooks, and Wikinews) in their mission to give free knowledge to everyone in the world. EduWiki is its annual education conference, bringing staff from universities, schools and other sectors together with wiki contributors. Together we explore how Wikimedia sites can support innovative, active, low-cost activities for learners, promoting subject skills and general information literacy. As well as these educational objectives, our collaborations can advance the goal of global, freely-available lifelong learning.
Wikipedia and its sister sites are increasingly used as platforms for educational assignments, in the UK and internationally. The conference is a chance to discover opportunities; report lessons learned; and explore how the free, open, learner-centred ethos of Wikimedia overlaps current trends in formal education.

Comments from participants
I wanted to thank wikimedia UK for organizing EduWiki 2013. I think they did a fantastic job with the conference, managed to get the right people there, opened doors to make things happen and left me motivated to continue to do educational outreach for Wikinews. Combine that with good wifi and decent food, I cannot wait for next year's conference. My only request would be less rain. - Laura Hale
I just want to get back to you in order to thank you for the great Education conference you all organized. I will take home a lot of inspiration and try to include some of the points - together with Charles - in our planned education activities in Switzerland for the next year. Furthermore I appreciate a lot that we got a slot to present KIWIX in front of all attendants. All the best - and hope to see you soon. - Muriel Staub
Thanks to @wikimedia for a great #EduWiki conference. Even more motivated to start a monthly Wiki Wednesday meet up on our #Lampeter campus - Kate Fisher
I'm now convinced of the importance of Wikipedia in open educational practices. - Brian Kelly
Thank you to Wikimedia UK, and all the contributors for organising this event. All the presentations were engaging and the attendees and contributors a great bunch of people!

Next steps
As collated during the wrap-up session of the conference:
I'd like to | but the main barrier I face is | The help I want is |
---|---|---|
Get a community for Wikikids in English!! m:Wikikids | Institutional culture/ Lack of colleagues' awareness | Spread the message |
Build up a strong partnership with Jisc in Wales | Time! | WMUK staff will meet JISC team of 11 on 21 January. Lis Parcell, who was at EduWiki, has been instrumental in the organisng the meeting. |
Improve Wikinews education platform | Time | Running training sessions for Wikinews |
Build on the knowledge I've picked up at this conference and share it with colleagues & customers | Keeping a grip on a very big, fast-moving topic | Easy signposts to appropriate resources; Jisc to communicate more internally (and externally) about its Wikimedia work |
Edit more. Create educational assignment | Time to organise the course page | Make a user's guide on how to 1) Get instructor's rights; 2) Set up the course page; 3) the various tools on the course page |
Create something that helps open groups to work together and gives an overview of what is happening | technical ability | advice, technical help [No contact details left] |
Highlight HE projects across the disciplines | Time - but if it aligns with employer's agenda I can tie it in. | Discussion - invitation to meetings |
Build a school of drawing. Deciding whether to make a wiki | Time! Wiki experience. Finance! | Materials/ resources [MLP met with this person and put the case for releasing as free and open content] |
Blog about the great wiki weekend | Time & confidence | [none] |
Develop and cultivate relationships between Wikimedians and educators | Not finding it easy to contact people (except via Twitter) | To include a call to action in the follow-up email |
Create an educational assignment / Contribute to Wikiversity or Wikinews / As part of a module assessment, online collaborative project, wiki-based | Institutional culture/ Lack of colleagues' awareness/ General ignorance and/or suspicion about Wikimedia activities, tools & resources | In conversation with WMUK already re: grant for educational projects |
Help to encourage more to contribute to Wikipedia | Living in a broadband not-spot | [none] |
