About EduWiki 2013

Wikimedia UK is the national charity supporting the eleven Wikimedia projects (including Wikipedia, Wikiversity, Wikibooks, and Wikinews) in their mission to give free knowledge to everyone in the world. EduWiki is its annual education conference, bringing staff from universities, schools and other sectors together with wiki contributors. Together we explore how Wikimedia sites can support innovative, active, low-cost activities for learners, promoting subject skills and general information literacy. As well as these educational objectives, our collaborations can advance the goal of global, freely-available lifelong learning.

Wikipedia and its sister sites are increasingly used as platforms for educational assignments, in the UK and internationally. The conference is a chance to discover opportunities; report lessons learned; and explore how the free, open, learner-centred ethos of Wikimedia overlaps current trends in formal education.

Themes addressed in the 2013 event included:

  • Plagiarism and the "Wikipedia problem"
  • Open resources and open practice
  • Learners as producers
  • Design and assessment of on-wiki assignments
  • Digital literacy and wiki-literacy
  • Wikipedia for younger audiences
  • Learning analytics
  • Open education and open access to research
  • Language education and writing skills

See the Times Higher Education article "Delete the Wiki Worries and get Close to the Edit" for more background.

Reflections and coverage

Tweets from the two days Storified by Brian Kelly and Martin Poulter: (Day 1) (Day 2)

Comments from participants

I wanted to thank wikimedia UK for organizing EduWiki 2013. I think they did a fantastic job with the conference, managed to get the right people there, opened doors to make things happen and left me motivated to continue to do educational outreach for Wikinews. Combine that with good wifi and decent food, I cannot wait for next year's conference. My only request would be less rain. - Laura Hale

I just want to get back to you in order to thank you for the great Education conference you all organized. I will take home a lot of inspiration and try to include some of the points - together with Charles - in our planned education activities in Switzerland for the next year. Furthermore I appreciate a lot that we got a slot to present KIWIX in front of all attendants. All the best - and hope to see you soon. - Muriel Staub

Thanks to @wikimedia for a great #EduWiki conference. Even more motivated to start a monthly Wiki Wednesday meet up on our #Lampeter campus - Kate Fisher

I'm now convinced of the importance of Wikipedia in open educational practices. - Brian Kelly

Thank you to Wikimedia UK, and all the contributors for organising this event. All the presentations were engaging and the attendees and contributors a great bunch of people!

Next steps

As collated during the wrap-up session of the conference:

I'd like to but the main barrier I face is The help I want is
Get a community for Wikikids in English!! m:Wikikids Institutional culture/ Lack of colleagues' awareness Spread the message
Build up a strong partnership with Jisc in Wales Time! WMUK staff will meet JISC team of 11 on 21 January. Lis Parcell, who was at EduWiki, has been instrumental in the organisng the meeting.

Help to encourage more to contribute to Wikipedia Living in a broadband not-spot [none]

Some "next actions" were reported verbally: 1) blog about the conference, 2) use ideas from this conference in presentations, 3) submit a proposal to an information literacy conference, 4) invite Martin in to department to speak to colleagues.
