Looks an excellent project. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 20:13, 21 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Michael, I hope it will be. I think it has a lot of potential. Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 10:53, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
Selection and censorship
Hi Stevie. This is an interesting proposal that has a lot of merit. Something to be careful of, though, is perceptions of censorship of content, which is a touchy subject (see e.g. Wikipedia:Offensive material. I'm not sure where the line would be where more stripping down would be too much censorship of the content. Maybe selecting articles by themes rather than removing content from a broad selection might be a better way to go - e.g. have a selection of Wikipedia articles around nature, or politics, etc. Thanks. - Hi Mike, thank you for your comment. That is a concern. It was perhaps naive of me but when I began researching the potential for this project I didn't realise just how powerful the sensibilities about the kind of content that can be used within those programmes. The example given to me was the article about the film The Deer Hunter, chosen simply because the person I met with liked the film. For a start, the poster is a depiction of someone "playing" Russian roulette. There are also other themes of violence and war in the film's plot which are also immediate red flags. I like the approach of selecting articles and creating a new Kiwix set rather than "censoring" a version that already exists. I wonder if there are any volunteers who may be interested in taking this on. Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 11:27, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
