Printed materials

It would be good if we could have some new printed education-related materials to start circulating at EduWiki 2014. This will need to build on whatever comes out of the Jisc partnership, the WiR at Coleg Cymraeg (esp, Welsh-language materials), and resources made available through the Wiki Education Cooperative. This needs to be considered in the larger context of Training handouts available through WMUK. Happy to have a conversation about this on this talk page, but we can eventually move it to a more appropriate page as things develop. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 11:02, 12 May 2014 (BST)

Would be even better if we could have them in time for Wikimania... Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 11:22, 12 May 2014 (BST)
Yes, it would. I suppose that this depends on what we decide to create/print and how soon we're able to decide on that. We could possibly make this one of the things to discuss at the Wikimania Education Fringe workshop on 21-22 June. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 11:27, 12 May 2014 (BST)
That's far too late for us to turn something around in terms of writing, designing, printing and distributing. I'll re-send the spreadsheet through which asks for suggestions for new materials for Wikimania. Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 11:55, 12 May 2014 (BST)
Yes, I see your point about how late the Fringe even is in terms of producing the necessary materials. I'll see about getting the ball rolling sooner than that, and we'll get whatever we can to Wikimania, of course, but I think there will be plenty of further requests and need for such materials beyond Wikimania. Thanks! --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 12:25, 12 May 2014 (BST)

Hotel

I'll be there! (Wearing my new "Wikimedian in Residence at the Royal Society of Chemistry" hat.) Is there a preferred/ discounted hotel, for people staying Thursday night? Are we meeting for food & beers (or whisky)? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:06, 25 September 2014 (BST)

Also, how do we get from the centre of Edinburgh to the venue? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:11, 25 September 2014 (BST)

All good questions! The venue accommodation (Salisbury Green) is conveniently located, but there are cheaper alternatives. Have you seen this? As for Thursday evening socialising, some plans are taking shape and we'll probably know more after this Sunday's Edinburgh meet-up. In terms of getting there: Edinburgh First is about a 25-minute walk from the railway station and there's also a number of local buses you can get. I'll check about this and put something up on the page asap. Thanks. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 13:20, 25 September 2014 (BST)
A getting here section has now been added to the information page. --Toni Sant (WMUK) (talk) 14:23, 26 September 2014 (BST)
I've also updated the Accommodation page with information from the Ibis hotels nearby - there's a 3 nights for the price of 2 deal on if you book before 19 October, and it's within reasonable walking distance and is well connected by bus. There's a Google Map I made a while back which has marked some of the guest houses that are located near the venue as well, there's loads of them but the prices all vary and it's too many for me to go through and check the rates for every night. Still, worth a look - the link to the map is in the Accommodation page and the Getting Here section now, too. ACrockford (talk) 14:26, 26 September 2014 (BST)

Thanks for all this useful info. So where are folks I know actually staying? And meeting on Thursday eve? Also, how hilly is the area (I might bring my Brompton)? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 20:54, 3 October 2014 (BST)

Thursday eve we've booked a basement bar just off the Royal Mile in the City Cafe on Blair St from 19:00 onwards, and we're trying to get everyone to come along for a wee get-together! Edinburgh is pretty hilly in general in that it's almost all centred around the one big hill, but there's not a lot of up and down. The main exception will be the location of the social on the Friday night, at Codebase on 3 Lady Lawson St - the building is located down the Grassmarket (which is quite steep) and part of the way up the West Bow (also relatively steep). Sorry if this isn't particularly helpful! ACrockford (talk) 15:34, 20 October 2014 (BST)
