The UK Wikimedian of the Year Awards recognise the work of the community that collaborates with and supports Wikimedia UK. Each award is for a different type of activity. We are looking for people and partnerships within the Wikimedia UK community who have really impressed you with their open knowledge work, especially in 2024/25.

We are particularly keen to hear about people and organisations who delivered projects addressing our strategic themes of knowledge equity, information literacy, and climate and environment.

For individuals, if you know their Wikimedia username please use that in the nomination. We will not disclose real names without permission.

UK Wikimedian of the Year

Andy Mabbett and Jo Baines

Andy has been recognised for the great support he had given to various on- and off-wiki projects, helping new and experienced editors alike, and able to engage with knowledge and experience in on-wiki discussions. Over the last year he's provided invaluable admin support to the Scots wiki community when it was needed, and has also made WMUK aware of community support issues where we could reach out and help.

Jo works tirelessly behind the scenes at University College London to promote Wikimedia projects. She has been organising regular events and she is always looking for ways that Wikimedia projects can support open knowledge at UCL. Most recently this has involved working with staff and students on a Wikidata project sharing information about UCL’s student publications, an initiative which has gained attention from other universities.

Partnership of the Year

Khalili Foundation

The Khalili Foundation has been working with WMUK since 2019. The charity hosts a Wikimedian in Residence, Martin Poulter, who shares images and data from the collections, and works to address cultural bias on Wikipedia. Dozens of new articles have been created, and topics relating to Japanese and Islamic art have been enhanced through new visual content and crafted text. In recent years, the work has broadened to include developing teaching resources for schools and a collaboration with UNESCO to encourage Wikimedians to write about the Memory of the World Register.

Up and Coming Wikimedian

User:Rhagfyr

Rhagfyr works as a librarian and has turned Brixton Tate Library into a hub of Wikimedia activity, with regular meetups and special sessions for LGBTQ+ History Month and Black History Month. She is an enthusiastic advocate for Wikimedia and working on under-represented topics. By working with communities that are sometimes hard to reach, she helps preserve information that might otherwise be lost and empowers people with new skills.
