Training the Trainers/October 2012 event

Volunteers keen to take a leading role in Wikimedia UK's training programme were encouraged to sign up to this workshop. For queries contact daria.cybulskaatwikimedia.org.uk

Where and when[edit]

The train-the-trainers workshop took place at Wikimedia UK Office, London EC2A 4LT, on the weekend of 27-28 October 2012, and it was run by a professional consultant. The timings of the event were: Saturday 9:30am (on the spot) - 6:30pm, Sunday 9am - 5pm. Light breakfast and lunch was provided; together with a workshop dinner after the training on Saturday. Travel and accommodation was also covered if notice was given.

Train the Trainer workshops are open to Wikimedia UK volunteers who can make a credible commitment to support training in future: it is a strong advantage to have been involved in training events. If your interest is in training people to contribute to a sister project such as Commons or Wikinews, rather than to Wikipedia, that's no disadvantage.

Aims[edit]

We know that some of our members are already delivering professional-quality training. They may think they don't need this weekend event, but it's especially important for them to sign up. It's a chance to:

  • Get accredited and receive detailed feedback about your presenting and training skills
  • Get general trainer skills which you can then apply when e.g. delivering specific Wikipedia workshops
  • Share your skills with others.
  • Help design a training programme that serves WMUK in the long term.

The places are limited to make sure that each participant gets individual attention and feedback, so please sign up below to express your interest.

Course details[edit]

The course focuses on enabling the participants to develop and deliver high quality training which draws on their own skills and expertise. You can then apply these skills whenever you run a training session. Note that this is about training, not presenting, so we will not be focusing on developing content of presentations on e.g. Wikipedia.

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Set training objectives and structure a session with appropriate material to meet those objectives
  • Present information clearly to different audiences and use visual aids effectively
  • Identify ways to make the sessions interactive and participative and deal with questions

As a part of the course you will also be receiving an hour long 1-1 telephone feedback. This provides the opportunity to discuss your performance and reactions to the course privately. It promotes intense reflection and rounded learning.

The participants will also be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of diversity in the training context
  • Respond appropriately to the needs of volunteer trainers
  • Understand the impact of different learning and communication styles when designing and delivering training
  • Use active listening to guide their interaction with participants
  • Give effective and appropriate feedback to other participants

Attendees[edit]

Before registering, attendees were asked to tell us about your training background (inside or outside Wikimedia) and give an email address or username through which you can be contacted. This training represents an investment by Wikimedia in its future, so the decision was made on the basis of how credibly each individual can commit to delivering future events. This is not a first-come, first-served list: the order in which people add themselves is of no significance.

  5. have designed and run workshops for people to learn the art of standup comedy. Never done any Wikimedia training before... unless you count helping a newbie who turned up at a wikimeet with his laptop.   6. I am a common wiki gnome by most accounts but run the fledgling imperial college wikipedians society. We hope to set up student focused training sessions at the college in the future.IcyEd

  9. I have been involved with training freshers and undergrad in presentation skills in India. I look forward to attend the Training the Trainers workshop so that I can conduct the events across college to train new people. User:tejomAtrA (talk)
  10. I have run week long training programmes in political risk management to an international audience in London. Have helped train doctors to design better PowerPoint presentations. Extensive experience in presenting. Self-employed and flexible. I live and work in London SW6, and could definitely attend all day Saturday and Sunday. I'm an active contributor to Wikipedia, and would love to train others. “Training the Trainers” sounds ideal for me. Hope you still have a place and that I'm not too late!   11. No formal training experience, but do occasionally show people how to use Wikipedia, part of the Imperial College Wikipedia Society. I think Wikipedia is a great tool and am enthusiastic to train others in using it. In terms of Wikipedia editing, I use Wikipedia to write my university course notes, and after incorporate what I have learnt into the mainspace (explains for my high proportion of 'User' edits. Of course, I also edit as I read. I was actively involved in the Articles for Creation project and occasionally in other projects (such as Wikify, Welcoming, Adoption). Interested but October 2012 date doesn't suit[edit]

Trained (with CITB) to teach schoolchildren about construction industry; followed PGCE for primary school teaching, which included some months teaching in schools; host stand at computer shows a few times a year to explain and demonstrate editing Wikipedia; host at Wikipedia's Teahouse. Time permitting, would be interested in helping to train/recruit new editors. -- Trevj (talk) 07:48, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm interested, but neither this date or the December one is suitable for me sadly. I'm most active on the Welsh language Wikipedia, and have recently organised an editathon and a training session/presentation this August. I do have some experience of presenting information as I'm a part-time Welsh for Adults tutor, but would like to gain more skills in delivering PC based training, designing activities and training material etc.--Rhyswynne (talk) 13:23, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

I've also delivered a lot of training for volunteers with other organisations. Only thing that could prevent me attending is if I'm on holiday.
