Wikimedia UK Annual Conference 2012

Wikiversity & WikiEducator

Thank you for your comment. While I have heard of WikiEducator, I have to be honest and say I could certainly be more familiar with it. One of the problem with Wikiversity is that it seems to try to do too many things at the same time. Is it a platform for OER sources, somewhere for educational courses, research into how to deliver OER, somewhere for collaborative research in general, somewhere to collate existing research, ...? One mention Wikipedia and everyone knows it's an encyclopedia, Wiktionary a dictionary, Wikiquote collection of quotes, etc... It might be better if Wikiversity were to focus on narrower goals and do it well. -- KTC (talk) 23:30, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Follow up

Actually, I'll reply here rather than the education strategy page. It was really interesting to chat with you over the weekend - especially to hear your comments on secondary level education (and I think we agreed on a number of points). In terms of the TOK; I think that's a fantastic idea that would serve as a really interesting move in the right direction. What would be needed to get moving on something like that?

Also, your comments about Wikiversity were very insightful; I'm not sure if I can help out with that, but I really hope that some of the changes you envisioned come to pass. --ErrantX (talk) 12:54, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Well T.O.K. seems to summarise some of what you have already been doing. Have you got any study guides you'd be happy to release as OER? It might be an idea to have something geared to the IB course, but which is adaptable to other uses . . . or something else which can be adapted to IB. I think a goodplace would be to start with what you have done. I had an article published in Denmark: [nebulabooks.dk/ExpectAnything.pdf Open Copenhagen], which is a bit too specialist, and I have also knocked around some ideas which used contemporary references as regards acadamic references to Wikipedia. My feeling is we could develop a series of resources which could span from schools up to university level. If we concentrate on each module being self sufficinet, then they can be improved through lessons learnt in application without waiting on other areas to be added.Leutha (talk) 13:11, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

As it stands no I don't have any actual study guides; most of my work so far has been "ad hoc" with lots of notes and planning. Certainly the creation of study materials & a program is one of the next steps I want to look at. Train the Trainers

I am pleased to announce that the Train the Trainers event which you have expressed interest in will take place on the weekend of 9-10 June at the Wikimedia UK office, 56 Leonard Street, London EC2A 4LT.

The timings of the training are roughly: Saturday 9:30 am - 6:30pm, Sunday 9am - 5pm. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided; we are also planning to go for a meal after the training on Sunday.

It is vital that you do not miss the start of the training session, so before confirming your availability please do make sure you can make the start time of the training.

We are able to cover travel and accommodation, including if you need to travel on Friday - an advance notice will be appreciated!

That's Nice

I just read about the Black History Month event on my talk page. Its a nice event actually. However, currently, I will be the only one to partake in that, since the Wikimedia Ghana has got no dedicated members. The organization is in its early stages and the greatest problem we face is not having people to join the foundation. We hope to mobilize enough people to help make such events a memorable one. Will definitely let you know of progress rate. The raw statistics are probably available in the dumps at [1] (which I think is what stats.grok uses as its source data). But after the wiki's moved to WMUK's hosting, then the WMUK should be able to access the statistics more easily and turn them into something pretty/useful (I think the developers use Piwik for this, although I'm not sure it's fully set up yet). An issue of interest

Hi, you may be interested in following the discussion at Commons:Commons:Village_pump#African_women_icon_-_an_offensive_amateur_cartoon_hosted_on_Commons. It may go nowhere, but I am disappointed to see a project used for apparently dubious reasons.
